IRWCCB Announces Global Certification Transition Program through December 2027

Due to several rapidly evolving challenges regarding computer-based standardized testing, the
IRWCCB voted to temporarily suspend all IRWCCB testing programs in order to develop a novel
competency-based evaluation process that ensures candidates meet the standards set by the
IRWCCB.

Although the transition program will require candidates to meet all certification standards and to comply with the IRWCCB/Global Code of Ethics, they will not be asked to complete a written and/or oral exam in order to become IRWCCB certified.

Candidates interested in becoming certified through the transition program will be expected to complete the transition application, pay the transition application fee and agree to complete the renewal of their certification prior to the expiriation date of their transitional certification.

The transition program will certify candidates for a period of one-year.

FAQ'S

Is certification without testing less valuable or important?

No, getting certified without testing is common, and the IRWCCB recognises all certified professionals equally.

Can I apply for multiple IRWCCB certifications under the transition program?

No, candidates are eligible for only one certification under the transition program.

Is the Global Certification Transition Program open to candidates regardless of where they live?

Yes, the IRWCCB has expanded its certification programs to candidates globally. Although historically the IRWCCB primarily certified candidates in Europe and Africa, interest in Recovery & Wellness Coaching has grown exponentially, and the IRWCCB regularly receives requests from potential candidates globally.

If I don’t renew my transition certification, can I apply for transition again in the future?

No, candidates are eligible for transition certification only once. It is very important that you complete your renewal prior to the expiration date.

If I get certified under the transition program, will I be required to test once the new testing program is launched?

No, once candidates become certified, they will not be required to test once the new testing program is launched. However, candidates interested in assisting the IRWCCB to evaluate the new testing program will be incentivised to participate, and their scores will not be released.

How long does the transition application process take?

The transition application takes about 5 minutes to complete and does not require any documentation, as the IRWCCB will use your self-report and attestation to review your application. However, the answers you provide should be supported by documentation (e.g., training, supervision, work experience, etc.). This documentation should be made available if IRWCCB staff are asked by the Board to review the supporting documentation of a transition application.

Can my employer or a sponsoring agency pay for my transition application?

Yes, but all candidates are required to complete their own transition application and attestation in order to be considered. Also, it is the candidate’s responsibility to complete the renewal process once they are certified.

How do I know that the certification I chose on my transition application is best for me?

The responses provided on the transition application will determine which certification is best for each candidate, based on the number of hours and types of training, coaching practice and supervision that the candidate has completed.

Can I upgrade my certification once I complete additional training, coaching and supervision?

Yes, certified professionals may upgrade their certification at any time once they have completed the additional requirements. For example, if someone has an ICARC and completes 500 hours of coaching work experience and additional training, they can apply for the ICARC-Advanced prior to renewal.

Why should I apply for certification under the transition program and not just wait for the new testing program?

Some candidates may choose to wait until the new testing program has been launched, which is currently estimated to be live by late 2027. However, becoming a certified professional under the transition program allows candidates to become certified immediately and continue to develop their professional skills and experience. It is up to each candidate, agency and system to decide what is best for their organisation.
